THE ROAD TRIP THAT
STARTED IT ALL.
Jeff and I were on a road trip. Flew from Los Angeles to Chicago, then hit the road to Wisconsin to visit his family for Christmas. Snow on the ground. Holiday music. That kind of cozy, romantic, everything-is-perfect feeling.
And then Jeff's niece Sadie sent him a text. She wanted to know our favorite animals.
Jeff said "dog." Very Jeff.
Me? I didn't have a favorite animal. So I thought: what would make this little girl smile? What would be fun? What would be unexpected?
I said flamingo.
Just like that. Flamingo. And then I moved on. I didn't think about it again.
The universe, however, was already working.
SHE PAINTED IT
IN MY COLORS.
We gathered to open gifts. There was one from Sadie.
I unwrapped it and I stopped breathing for a moment.
This little girl had hand-painted me a flamingo. Because I said flamingo on a road trip weeks before. She held onto that and made me something beautiful.
But here's the part that still gives me chills: the colors.
Hot pink. Black. Gold stars.
My exact brand colors. And she had absolutely no idea.
Oh. And what was she wearing that Christmas morning? A sweatshirt that said: "Make Today Awesome."
She's not related to me by blood. But she is my mini me. And the universe knew it before either of us did.
"She painted my brand colors without knowing they were my brand colors. The universe doesn't whisper. Sometimes it hands you a painting."
